We're Home!

Thank you all for your prayers for us. We left Boa Vista about midnight on Monday and spent the rest of the night in the Manaus airport. We arrived in Miami at dusk, had dinner, got a hotel, and left at dawn. We made a quick plane change in Salt Lake City and arrived home in Portland about noon on Wednesday. It is 50 degrees and windy here. It feels so good!

We had a wonderful trip and are looking forward to telling you all about it. I'm sure we took over a thousand photos. I will post more when I am not so tired.

Last Day

The time has flown so fast and we are not looking forward to saying goodbye to Dan & Margie. We've enjoyed meeting their co-workers and making new friends. Eric & Donna came over for lunch today and Dave & Beth and their kids will come for icecream tonight.

Yesterday we went to church in the village that Dan teaches in twice a month. We enjoyed meeting the people there and shared a potluck of rice, noodles, fahrina, and meat with them. Larry & Darlene stayed back as Darlene wasn't feeling well, but she is much better today. We went in Dan's truck but the air conditioning went out on the way home so it was a warm ride. Last night we went out for Brazilian pizza on the water front of the Rio Blanco. It was a beautiful evening. Then we came back to the house and spent some time in prayer together.

Today we did some finishing up work--last patches on the roof, painting the last of 15 gallons of paint, sweeping and arranging the school rooms. The students bring their own hammocks and hang them from the hooks on the walls. Gordon also spent some time making more repairs on Dan's truck.

The weather continues to be hot in between the rain showers. We've been taking 2 showers a day. The faucets here have only one handle. No hot or cold water, just room temp, which is very refreshing in the shower. They don't have water heaters but the shower heads have an electric heater on them if you want hot water. (You just have to be sure you are not standing in the water when you flip the switch!)

Believe it or not we are really looking forward to the cooler weather in Portland! We are eager to be home with our families and to see all of you. We are so thankful to the Lord for the opportunity to spend this time with Dan and Margie, deeping our friendships with them and getting a first hand look at their ministry. We will share lots of photos with you when we get home.

We leave Boa Vista tonight about 1:30 am and will spend the rest of the night in the Manaus airport. We have reservations at a hotel near Ft Lauderdale for Tuesday night and are looking forward to the pool or a walk on the beach.

The Gutter is in!

The men were relieved to get the gutter installed today.  It was easier than expected but was still a long days work.  We took a break at lunch and went to eat at Trebo's, an all-you-can-eat Brazilian BBQ with meat carved at the table.  We especially enjoyed the roasted fresh pineapple, but not so much the Brahma Bull hump meat.Tomorrow we are leaving at 6 am for a church service in a small community where Dan and Margie minister often. Dan's text is 1 Corinthians. We are so enjoying our time here and hate to see it getting close to the end.Counting bug bites from a walk in the jungle (chiggers?):Gordon 8, Dan 10, Bonnie 30, Larry 50, Donna 200,(ouch). So much for using DEET!Thanks for all your prayers!  We appreciate you!

Installing the new custom gutter that the men designed. They were happy to get it installed without any rain falling. It runs down the center of the building where two buildings were joined together. No more leaks!

Crossing the Tacutu river from Brazil to Guyana on the barge. A large new bridge next to the barge is almost complete. All 8 of us were in the blue truck which Dan borrowed since his was still in the shop at the time. His has since been fixed.

Working Hard

Sorry we haven't written more. Our access to the computer is limited and the speed is a lot slower. I will try to send some photos tomorrow. We have been working really hard on the school building. We've gotten a lot of painting done inside and the men are busy building a large custom gutter to keep the rain out.

It is still warm here but rainy season started TODAY. Everything is cooler and wet now. Margie is especially happy for the rain to water her plants.

On Tuesday we took a break and drove to Guyana to see the sights and do some shopping for things they can't get here. We went across the ferry on a barge powered by two small boats with 15hp outboard motors. We had a picnic lunch of Guyanese takeout by a river on the way home. Our lunch for the 8 of us cost $2700 in Guyanese dollars (about $16 US dollars).

Yesterday we got to visit some friends of Dan and Margie's and had some very unique experiences. We took lots of pictures and will share those with you when we get home. We also got a lot of bug bites!

We are so enjoying our time with Dan and Margie!! Last night we went to prayer meeting with them (all in Portugese again) and met all the missionaries they work with.

Looking forward to sharing with you all when we get home. Thanks for praying for us. We are all well despite the bug bites and sunburns.

Adult Class in the Village

The Sunday School Bus!

Sunday

We got in a little earlier today on the "wave of praise" around the world! We left the house at 7 am (4 am PDT) to go to a small village not too far from here. We worshipped with about 6 other adults and a couple dozen children. What an experience that was! They sang for us in Portuguese and we sang a couple songs in English. Then they asked us to share testimonies and Dan T. translated. They were encouraged that our testimonies weren't so different from them after all. We sat on benches under a tree as they aren't allowed by the village to build a church building. Pray for the missionary working with this small congregation that they will continue to grow in the Lord. We also got to see the process of manioc being made into farinha, tapioca, and flat bread.

We had dinner at Brazilian Buffet (you pay by the kilo!) on the way home.

Tonight we went to Primeira Igreja Presbiteriana de Roraima (1st Presb.). It is where Dan and Margie go when they are not traveling. We enjoyed the service there, even though it was all in Portuguese. A favorite part was when one of the pastors called all the children and teachers down to the front and prayed with them before they went off to children's church. We also enjoyed the air conditioning! It is still very warm here. (A few have sunburns)

This is the building we are working on.

Dan & Margie send their greetings!

Camping out in the Manaus airport.

Notice the tape on its mouth?!

Ready for our airboat ride in Florida. Believe it or not there is actually an alligator in the right background that the captain spotted after the photo.

Boa Vista

We arrived safely!  After a 13 hour layover in Manaus we took about an hour flight to meet Dan and Margie in Boa Vista.  We only got a brief view of the Amazon because of cloud cover.  It is so good to see Dan & Margie!!  We can't access the blog from their house but today we are at the MEVA office to see where Margie works so I can type here, then I will try to upload photos.

It is hot here.  It was over 100 degrees the day we arrived but it has been raining so it is cooler now, the first rain they have had in weeks.  We seem to have brought the rain with us, it rained in Florida and Manaus as well.  We worked hard on Friday on the building they are renovating for the new dorm and school.  It is actually a house that has been added onto a few times.  The men tore off old corrugated roofing panels, inspected for cracks, and replaced some new and old panels. They are about 1/3 of the way done with that.  They had to remove some very large limbs from a tree over the roof.  Inside, we prepped walls for painting, and Larry is sorting through the maze of wiring to make improvements. Gordon worked half the day with a gecko on his shoulder!

Dan and Margie live in a house on the same property as the school.  There is also a guest house, a recording studio for radio programs, and some other small houses.  Dan and I are staying in Dan & Margie's office in the house.  Larry & Darlene are in their guest room, and Gordon and Bonnie are in the office to the recording studio.  There is no hot water in the house but cold showers feel great!

After a day of work we headed to downtown Boa Vista for supper out at an outdoor food court.  We ate Brazilian hotdogs (complete corn, peas, shredded chicken, and shredded potato chips!) and Venezulean Enrollados .  I think we were the only Americans there.  Then we had icecream at a shop where you scoop your own with flavors like "green corn" (tasted similar to creamed corn), Passion fruit, Mango, Guava, Acai, Caja (my favorite), etc.

Today we did some shopping for supplies for the work project and walked to the office here.  Teeter's truck is still in the shop so we are riding around in a 1990  Toyota Land Cruiser with a pickup bed.

Tomorrow we are going to 2 different church services. We are all feeling well and are thankful to the Lord for blessing us.

We have been in the Manaus airport for a LONG 12 hours. It is very hard to sleep here. We had banana bread and tomato juice for breakfast supplied by Bonnie! We are eager to get on the plane and see Dan & Margie!

Dan & Margie

They said there should be no problem mentioning their names on the blog, and we can upload photos at their mission office. So I will post a photo of them when we get there.

Margie said last week it was 90 degrees in the house, 100 in the shade and 120 in the sun! While here in Portland we are dodging hail!
